Thanks for your honesty dunster. I tried paper piecing once and it didn't go well. To compound my problem, my sewing machine decided it was time to poop out. For some reason it's not sewing. Maybe I need to go back to my original idea of plain squares. I give up for today. Thanks everyone for your help.

Why don't you "float" the star?

I can understand your dilemma Twisted Quilter. When dealing with various size of blocks from a block swap, I had to improvised to get them to all work together. I found that attaching over sized triangles on all four sides and then after pressing, then trim them all down to one size. You can't use a star because the block has to be divisible by four. The center of a star block is the same size as the two side pieces.

This is what the block looks like and this is what the quilt would look like to scale of 4.25" finished blocks...... NOTE this was drawn on EQ5....

Yes, that would be my suggestion, too.

Wow, great suggestions! I'll look into the floating star, but I'm loving Maniac's pattern. Thanks guys.

Try drafting the sawtooth star the same size as your blocks. Then cut and use the pieces as templates, adding 1/4 seam allowance. Try this using scraps of fabric. I done this and if has work ok for me.

Accurate cutting and 1/4" seams were the culprits. Blocks aren't perfect, but this is a scrappy quilt. Working with these small half triangle pieces, I have to take it nice and slow. My machine wants to eat up my fabric when I start sewing and my 1/4" seam wants to decrease towards the end. It takes about 53 min. to do one block. I hope this project doesn't end up in my UFO pile. Thanks everyone for your input!
