I also have the better homes and garden encyclopedia. Since I am mainly self taught...it was an important part of my sewing room!

This is my go-to book for a lot of things: mattress sizes, quilt sizes, figuring yardage, figuring number of blocks for on-point settings, setting triangle sizes, etc, etc. A quick and great reference for all those figures that don't stay in my head anymore LOL

For a beginner, I would say "My First Quilt Book," Carol Doak. She shows every step in detail and shows pictures . Judy Martin has good book for intermediate and on up.
Those are my favorites. Mariah

Please understand that my choice is disability related, but my 'go to' quilt reference is "Quilt in a Day, Irish chain quilts" by Eleanor burns. Due to memory problems I have trouble organizing my projects, so I use it as a reference to get my quilts planned, cut, and assembled. For everything else, I depend on all you wonderful quilters and this board. My skills continue to expand. I am about to begin my second quilt using half square triangles, (Jewel box quilt), and I am determined that ALL corners are perfect this time. I have eagerly read every post about making points easier, and I now believe you all have taught me enough for success. Thanks to all of you, my "quilty" buddies.

My reference book is The Quilting Answer Book by Barbara Talbert. It's a tiny book that I purchased at Books A Million and have used it often.

I love books by Eleanor Burns as they have easy to read instructions, plus illustrated pictures, and there may be tutorials on her Quilt in a Day website, although I haven't been on in a while. There was a book by Carol Doak "Your First Quilt Book, or it should be." I have taken classes from her and she's a very knowledgeable teacher. I had a video by Georgia Bonesteel, however, it's VHS and I would need a DVD to see it, bummer; however, I did by 2 volumes of her binders on Lap Quilting, complete with templates. Granted I purchased it several years ago when my daughter saw the binder and picked out a pattern for me to make my first quilt, plus my only hand quilted quilt, before carpal tunnel. I'd be interested in what other quilters have to recommend.
