I can't find how to post this on the vintage machine thread, so thought I'd try here. I need to clean and condition the wood on our 201K, but don't want to damage her decal or strip her finish. Just want to clean and condition her finish. Any experience with this folks? Raw wood is not new to me--I love gunstock oil, but this is new to me. Thank you all. Don

I can work on the machines and I know quite a bit about them but I do not have the foggiest about cabinet refinishing. I know I am going to get my chance at it this spring hopefully but it will all be new to me!

Don, use Murphey's Oil Soap and clean the wood. It won't hurt the decal.

After the wood is dry, use a good paste wax, or one of my favorites to use is Howard's Bees Wax with Orange Oil.

Your gunstock oil would probably work too, as long as it doesn't have stain in it! :)

Thanks everybody. Excellent ideas. I think I would have to caution against the use of gunstock oil though. The gunstock oils I know of contain mineral spirits as a carrier for the linseed oil/hardener components, and may damage decals. The oil soaks in and becomes tacky quickly, showing all streaks and fingerprints too. I've used it extensively to seal and finish wood on my artwork and gunstocks. But that's on raw wood. I really like the Murphy's Oil Soap idea, followed by paste wax approach.I hope to try it today. It hints of something my grandmother might have done to care for her furniture. We'll let the results be known.
