Large bed spread under smaller quilts??
#11
As the saying goes ........... your quilt, your house, your rules!
Of course, you can do it.
You said you do have smaller quilts you would like to use, so try it with another larger quilt or bedspread you have and see what you think.
I do it all the time .... flip a bedspread size quilt over to give the plain back.
Then lay my smaller quilt overtop.
I first did this with a large lap Christmas quilt.
Laying over a chair in the family room, did not do it justice. Nor did I truly get to enjoy it!
It fit the top of my double bed.
Just so happened that I had another quilt where the backing coordinated with it.
So the flip over happened.
And no ... it does not have to be white.
The one above is a black and gold backing. Perfectly suited the Christmas front.
I have a light green backed quilt that works well another.

I purchased an all over machine quilted solid color quilt , at Marshalls for about $40.00. I bought the next size up than my actual mattress in a ivory color. It spans almost to the floor ( no need for a dust ruffle/bed skirt) and change my quilts of various sizes when ever I get in the mood. Most of the major retailers sell these such as Kohls, Overstock.com, etc.

I got new bedding- solid taupe quilted comforter, shams and bed skirt and have several bed runners & small pillows planned to make both seasonal and holiday to change the look in our bedroom.

In winter we have a denim fray edge quilt that just covers the top, we lay it over our doona which has a check pattern. A full size denim fray edge is too big and heavy for even our large top loader so the smaller one works better.

I think we were the last people on the planet to change from double bed mattress to queen
So 3/4 of my quilts were smallish for the queen. I told an old sheet, ripped it into five sections, and stitched a section to the bottom of those too short quilts. Works for me as now they stay in place. I use a larger quilt on top.
Not an answer to your bedspread question, but the idea might help someone with bed quilts that don't fit the bed.

it's a great idea that works -- I have an oversized white quilt that I use as underquilt in cold weather and a small quilt on top -- it looks good, protects the white one from doggy-wear, and shows off the quilt on top!! -- go for it!!
