I am using Yenmet metallic thread with Schmetz 130MET, 90/14 metallic needle, a thread stand, lowere my top tension and slowed down my machine. Problem: the thread shreds and I end up with a clump that looks like a wooly caterpiller! I've changed my needle but it's still the same. I have to keep stopping and cut the thread and rethread the needle. Anyone have any ideas? At this rate it will take me days just to get a little work done.

I haven't tried this but I read somewhere to place your thread about 1-3 ft. away from your machine. Hope this helps.

also use a needle with a larger eye to prevent shredding.

You might try going to Superior Threads in their education area to see if you could find something helpful there with thread, needle size, tips etc. Even tho it's not their thread there are an amazing number of helps for thread problems and I'm sure they would work for you also.

When using a metallic thread it is best to use a TOP STITCH or JEANS needle. I would use at least a 16 or 18. Your thread is shredding because there is not enough room for the thread when the needle comes back up.

Also, you might want to put SEWERS AID on your thread. This is a liquid silicone that helps metallic threads slide thru the tension guides.

Never use a high tension with metallic thread. My tension may be as low as 1. Also when using metallic thread I use a thin bobbin thread.

Put your thread in a mason jar (or something similar and place it as far away from your machine as possible. Also adjust your tension down and as you have done - lower your speed. Good luck - it can be frustrating for sure.
