There are many different qualities and weights of muslin. If you are not familiar with the brand, and you are ordering it on line, it might be a good idea to get a small amount to check the quality. I use muslin a lot for backings, but some are so thin, that you couldn't really use them. Bleached/unbleached is just what it sounds like. Either the natural cream color of the cotton, or bleached white.

Certainly not a silly question. I'm glad you asked it because although I've used muslin for backing and even in piecing, I sure didn't know all the info given today. The info was valuable and will help me solve some of the problems I've had with muslin. Going to try it again.

I mostly use muslin on the back of my quilts also. I try to get it on sale at Joanns and I buy a better quality one. Some are loosely woven and I care for those much.

I just bought bleached white wide width muslin backing from Fabric.com for a quilt back. I was very pleasantly surprised, it is soft, finely woven and looks like great fabric for the price! Have not washed it yet but am not expecting any problems. Backing for queen size quilt under$25 total cost seems like a great deal to me.
