There was a bit of tongue-in-cheek with my reference to fabric, thread, batting. Maybe we should give credit to the farmer, the cotton plant, the sheep, etc. Nothing we create is entirely original nor does the quilter have a hand in everything that goes into the materials a quilt is made of. We buy fabric, thread, batting, all already created. We either use public domain designs that someone once created, buy someone's pattern, learn from a class, observe quilts, or create something ourselves synthesized from what we have collectively seen in our world experiences. Nothing comes from a vacuum. The person who assembles the materials, envisions a finished product, does the cutting and sewing and quilting, and finally the finishing is the person who creates the quilt. Fabric is only fabric, designs and patterns are only patterns and designs. The person or persons who take the materials and put the parts together are the quilter's who create the finished product, a quilt. That is my thoughts.
