Hello everyone, I am in desperate need of help with set in triangles. Can any one help me Please. I am working on a baby quilt called scrappy patch hearts for by ggd who hasn't gotten here yet, she will be here in late July. I am putting this together and have gotten to where you have to set in triangles around the edges and I am having really a hard time. Any help will be greatly appeciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am having trouble with putting them together with blocks, they are in set on the sides, when I sewed my blocks together they are staggered and you have to sew the triangles in the staggered part, does that make sense? I have a row of 5 blocks sewed together then when I sew the next row I have to skip the first block and sew the next one to the second block. Does that make sense to you what I am trying to say? Gosh I hope so.

I went on the site that you told me about and I forgot to mention that my blocks are set on point and the triangles are sewn in between the blocks on the outside, that picture that was on the first site you told me about looks like my blocks, if that helps you understand what I am talking about. Thanks for your help.

I lay out the blocks diagonally and then sew them together on a diagonal slant, then sew the rows on a diagonal slant. There isn't any set in seams that way.

I always have trouble with the math to figure out the size of the setting triangles but there are places on the internet that do it for you or give you the formula to figure it out.

That is the way I do it also. If you scroll down on the first link site, there is a diagram on how to do it. That way they aren't set in triangles. Good luck.

Thanks ladies for your help, I went to that website and printed out the diagram and I will try and see if this will work for me I have already got my rows sewed together, so looks like I will have to take them out and redo them, I really do apperciate all your help. This is how I do it also. If you cut a square the same size as your (unfinished) blocks and then cut it from corner to corner diagnally you will have a traingle that fits just right. At least it has worked for me! lol

Just wannaquilt - That is a great idea, what if you would make a whole block, sew it on to the diagonal row and then when all were sewn together, line up with your ruler and cut off, then no bias to deal with...or is that what you meant? I know it would be wasting some material, but I hate working with the bias edges of triangles...always manage to stretch the darn things! lol

To set in a Triangle, pin it in the middle of the point and work towards the outside. Now sew from the pin point to the outside edge. Make sure you double stitch the point to start with as it will get pulled in the next step. Now twist the whole peice around to match up on the other side of the triangle pin in place and sew from the point outward to the edge.
