I figured out what quilt I want to do for my very artistic, future tattoo artist friend, Deni. For those of you who haven't read the other post, she's pregnat and her due date is a week before her birthday. She's kind of worried that she's just going to get baby stuff for her birthday. So I want to do something extra special for her birthday in the form of a quilt.

I finally decided that I want to do the Tsunami quilt in black and dark red.

I want to do the red in batik and the black in true solid---I think it'll give it kind of an artsy, stained glass appeal to it. And I got this quilt down to a science now so I got all my homework for it done and there's not a whole lot of pre-planning to do. But I still have a few questions.

1. What is a good website that sells batik fabric?

2. My information on batik is limited so any tips or suggestions on it would help.

3. Do you think I should add a thick, solid black border? If I decide to add one should I go with a red binding like I have in the picture or a black binding to blend in with the border?

4. I'm not sure how big to make this. I want to make it big enough so if she wanted to put it on her bed she could, but I don't know how big her bed is. I'm almost positive its not a Queen. I know its big enough to fit two people, shoulder to shoulder. Got any idea on how big her bed is?

Oh, here's an updated layout of the quilt plus a key for anyone who was interested in this quilt. I changed about 14 blocks, eliminating 56 unnessicary pieces. Doesn't change the design at all, just makes less work. :) And I purposely made the blocks in the key grey so you could see the layuot of the blocks in case anyone was going "Hey, I thought she was going for black, not grey".

Fabric Depot is having a big sale on batiks right now

https://www.fabricdepot.com/index.php?page=CatalogPage&pageid=16

They also have Kona fabric pretty reasonably priced if you get it in 6 yard pieces. I have bought this before and it is good quality.

Girl, you are a basket full of talent. I could never in a million years do soemthing like this! Sounds like they have a doulble bed. Most magazines and lots of websites can give you the size you want--I don't ave it in my head, but its not hard to find out. Re: border--do it just like your sketch--I love it!

I copied this from a web site
http://www.sylviasquiltdepot.com/sch...e.htm#mattress
GOT IT COVERED?
Don't know how big to make your quilt?
Remember to add 12-14" on each side (and the foot) for the drop and 14" at
the head if you want it to tuck under a pillow.

Mattress Size Quilt Size (These are all measurements for a 16" drop)
Receiving N/A 36" X 45" or 45" X 45"
Crib 23" X 46"
Lap Quilt N/A Between 52" and 68" wide. 52" to 78" in length.
Twin 39" X 75" Between 64" and 72" wide. 86" to 96" in length.
Full 54" X 75" Between 70" and 88 wide. 86" to 100" in length.
Queen 60" X 80" Between 88" and 99" wide. 94" to 108" in length.
King 76" X 80" Between 94" and 108" wide. 94" to 108" in length.

Measurements are approximate.

Quilt Size Amount of Backing Needed
Twin 71" x 101" 6 yards
Full 86" x 101" 7.5 yards
Queen 92" x 106" 8.25 yards
King 108" x 106" 9.25 yards

IMHO on the size-If you want it to go on a bed (possibly) I would go with a queen. Even if she has a double bed now, if they ever up-size to a queen it would still fit nicely. I have a queen/king size quilt on a king bed and it is a bit small. Wish the quilt was larger. Our guest bed is a queen and it fits 2 people shoulder to shoulder. Seems pretty tight after having a king!

Love the plan you have! Hope you will post pictures!

your plan is beautiful just as you show it! I can't wait to see it finished.

Batik will be very pretty. I did an Irish Chain for my daughter with a batik red, batik gray and black. It was very rich looking. She loved it.

I was kind of thinking that too (to make it queen sized). I'm just wondering if I should add that black border for a drop.

I had to update the chart. Last night I noticed there are two different pinwheels going in two different directions. Good thing I caught it because I'd hate to make it and then have to fix half a dozen or a dozen blocks (depending on what pinwheel I made).

Here's the updated chart

I've been looking at the website amma gave me and I really like a batik that I found on there. It the closest to the deep red/blood/garnet color that Deni likes. A "watercolor batik" (I'm assuming that's a type of batik---I'm not an expert on this type of fabric). I think it would work well.

https://www.fabricdepot.com/index.php?page=ProductPage&pageid=19133

I wish I had EQ so I could input this fabric into the design and see what it would look like (and see if it matches the image in my head). The Paint program only goes so far. *sigh*

They're having a sale on watercolor batiks right now (I think they're like $5 per yard), but I'm not sure if I'll be able to buy some within this sale---for once I have money and I have to save it for something else. Otherwise they're like $10.99 a yard! Is there a cheaper alternative?

Now that I think about it, with what I have in mind the quilt will end up looking similar to a batik I saw on thousandsofbolts.com
