Eh, if I had the money, I would get a walking foot. And I really don't know what kind I would have to get to fit my sewing machine. Hey, I've already made two quilts without one. Going without one for a third shouldn't be a problem......hopefully.

You can do it! Especially if you strip piece the whole top. It should go together in no time flat and leave you lots of time to quilt it. Another thought--Have you considered layering the top, batting and backing together and sewing around the edges, leaving a hole to turn the quilt right-side out? Then you wouldn't have to bind it either.
You're very thoughtful--what a nice gift!

Funny thing happened to me last night trying to get this quilt started.
I can't cut strips of fabric and cut pieces from them to save my life so I have a set of Optima square rulers that I trace and then cut my pieces out by hand. My design uses my 4 1/2" square ruler.
Well, I had gotten all my fabric washed and my red fabric was all ironed. I was ready to start tracing about 80 squares onto it when I couldn't find my 4 1/2" square ruler. I must of looked for it for about an hour. Just tore my room apart.
The next size ruler I had was 6 1/2" and if I used that size it would change my design dramatically...I'd go from a total of 165 squares to about 63 squares. That's not even half of what the original design called for.
What I ended up doing was taking the 6 1/2" sqaure, marking it at the 4 1/2" marks, traced one corner of a square onto the fabric, flipped the ruler around, and drew the other corner in. I spent a good 2 hours drawing 24 squares, making sure everything lined up just right and that all the squares were 4 1/2".
I saw that it was getting late (or really early depending on what time you get up) so I went to clear off my mattress and get ready for bed. Guess what turned up? Yup, my 4 1/2" square ruler. I was so mad! So I spent 2 hours trying to make 4 1/2" squares with a 6 1/2" ruler when the 4 1/2" ruler was sitting like 2 feet away from me the whole time.

*sigh* Every quilt I've made so far has tested me in some way.
Last night I had quickly sketched out a design with 6" squares, but it seemed too...simple. That's why I spent two hours carefully tracing 4 1/2" squares with a 6 1/2" square ruler. But now that I've found the 4 1/2" ruler it'll be easier to do. Rewashed the red fabric and going to re-do it.

I would call that practicing.
Just like yesterday when I put the very last seam in a charity top. Putting the two halves together I managed to put both seams down instead of the right sides together. I was just practicing that seam. Major pain in the tail.

But I hate "practicing". :( Well, got about 3/4 of the red squares done and about 1/4 of the black.
Eh, not sure if I'll work on it tonight. I kind of had a bad day. Well, the washing machine overflowed...only reason why I found out about it is because I remembered the brownies I forgot about in the oven and went to the near-by laundry room to go get a rag so I could pull them out of the oven. Stepped into a half inch of freezing cold water, which I spent like an hour cleaning up with every towel in the house. Then, my brother decided to be a little brat and the cell phone died and he disconnected the phone so I couldn't call Mom to say "Hey, I need you to come back home." (I just love living at home). So I kind of panicked. And its also the third anniversery of the death of Dimebag, the lead singer of Pantera (he was shot on-stage at a concert three years ago :(), so I was kind of down to begin with (which is why I made the brownies that I forgot about).
I'm thinking of just curling up in bed with some Mountain Dew and watch Princess Mononoke. :-) I'll work on it tomorrow night.
