My granddaughter in law to be has asked me to make her veil. I am a quilter and not a seamstress. I think I can gather it at the top and finish that off but it has a scalloped edge. I am not sure how to go about making that happen. Any ideas? It looks like the edge is sewn down not hemmed but something like serge maybe? I have never done or seen any serging so I thought maybe someone who has done this could tell me. Thanks!!!

I think quilt4u is right , it looks like beads all around the edge. I think it's all hand work! It is very beautiful. and the scallops shouldn't be too hard, but all those beads, well it will take awhile! I don't think I would use a serger on it.

I don't think you would want to serge a veil. I like what Quilt4U suggested. It is probably hand rolled and hand sewn. I would go to a bridal shop and check them out also.

Do you have any bridal shops near you? What about a trip to see some 'in the flesh' so to speak. You could have a good look at various finishing treatments and even perhaps get some ideas from the staff?

I made my daughter's veil, but it wasn't scalloped like the one in your picture. I didn't serge it, as she wanted a narrow lace edging on it. The net doesn't usually fray much, so I just sewed the lace to the raw edge. It's still OK today, 20 years later.

I guess it would depend on if Nicole wants the beading or doesn't mind a simpler finish. I am not a seamstress and she is ok with it if I can't do it. But I always hate to say no when they ask me to do something. We'll have to see I guess. THank you all for your comments!!! I appreciate it!!

this was either done by hand or you can use a cording type foot and buy the beading already strung or you can string it yourself.

most couture wedding dresses are by hand and the "off the rack" are typically done by machine.

you don't have to use beads if you don't want any trim that she likes can be used.

a fabric store that carries fashion fabric will have what you need. if you happen to live near NYC you can pick all this stuff up in the garment district.

you could also check online from bridal trims.

Most veils are hand sewn. My daughter's was. The lady was a pro at making them. You would tell her what you wanted, she'd draw a picture of it and make it exactly how you envisioned it.

You could maybe get some material and "play" with it to get the feel of using it. Then go for the real thing.
