Do you pin your quilt to sandwich it? When I do the free motion, the pins get in the way. I am going to try a tagger gun. What is your opinion of using that?

Got a tagger gun as a gift. Never could get it to work without jamming. Tried using it on last quilt and it broke. Basting spray!

I pin and just remove a few pins in the immediate area I'm quilting. I would think the tagger gun would be more of a problem since Murphy's law would mean that every tag you place will end up exactly where you don't need it!

Some people like to spray baste instead of pinning.

Spray basting is the best[IMHO]

Spray baste for me!

Isn't basting spray messy?

I spray baste & pin. Don't like the tagger gun; doesn't hold tight enough and fabric still shifts. What a waste of money that was! I then remove the pins as I go, if necessary. I stitch as close to it as I can before I remove it.

I used to pin, now I use a microtack. They are the tiniest tags, and I use the gun not to go from front to back, but to take a 'stitch' on the surface, so both ends are on the front. It holds the sandwich reall tightly together.

Trick is to try and use the most contrasting tacks so you can find them again, and to put them in with regular spacing.

My grandma taught me to pin with safety pins (maybe due to my age at the time) and then I went back and made long stitches all over my quilt. Then, she let me quilt it. We did it by hand those days and they were twin size quilts that I made.
