OK - am I the only SLOB - 'was just wondering how many of you "tidy up" immediately after sewing, or do you close the door and walk away until the next time. Then cleaning happens when you can't stand it any longer........this scares me - am I a near-to-be HOARDER??

QuiltingKrazy 08-21-2011 05:16 AM

That's why I now have my own sewing room! I can just leave everything "as is" when I stop sewing for whatever reason!
I can close the door and come back later to everything just as I left it! I must admit, I do have to sweep the floor to get those little strings and stray pieces that drive me crazy sticking to my feet. lol

watterstide 08-21-2011 05:17 AM

your not alone. i clean up when i can't find what i am looking for...usually in the middle of the next project.

orangeroom 08-21-2011 05:17 AM

I was just about to type that I'm a neat and tidy...but I turned around to look at my room and, it's quite messy. So, I suppose that I'm both a slob and neat and tidy. I recently had my gallbladder removed, so putting things back where they belong (if it's low) isn't happening yet. Usually during a project my sewing room is orderly, but not OCD neat and tidy. If guests are coming and I know it, then it becomes neat and tidy, even in the middle of a project.

Patty Patches 08-21-2011 05:18 AM

YES I belong in the slob catagory, right now my whole house belongs in that catagory, just can;t make myself get up and clean, would rather be sewing

bigsister63 08-21-2011 05:18 AM

Acrtually my sewing room is in the basement with "admittance by invite only" so no one see my mess. (especially my DH nor does he see stuff I have)

amma 08-21-2011 05:18 AM

LOL I don't think being messy is the same as being a hoarder :D My area gets cleaned as needed, but not after each project :D:D:D

dltaylor 08-21-2011 05:19 AM

I am guilty of cleaning up after each sewing session

dgmoby 08-21-2011 05:20 AM

Well, honestly, my room becomes a mess during a project, but I do require myself to clean it up and put everything away before I start a new project.

If I skip from one project directly into another, without cleaning, I can't find anything! My room is so small that if I don't clean up between them, you can't even walk safely in there :)

So - I think I'm both also :)

RenaB 08-21-2011 05:22 AM

I tidy up every time I am finished sewing for the night. This way the next day everything is fresh and in order. No hunting for something. I find I would waste more time hunting than just putting things away after I am done for the night.

bjeriann 08-21-2011 05:23 AM

Since I redid my sewing room earlier this summer I have turned into a neat freak. When I'm done for the day or with a project I clean and put everything in it's place. I even vaccum a couple times a week. I'm starting to scare myself.

fabric_fancy 08-21-2011 05:23 AM

my studio is always in some state of mess.

the section devoted to dyeing, painting, printing has a floor that looks like a jackson pollock painting.

SharBear 08-21-2011 05:25 AM

I'm a tidy when a project is finished person. For me it marks the end of one project and the anticipation of starting a new one!

PaperPrincess 08-21-2011 05:25 AM

My mom once told me that I was too creative to be neat! I sew in the dining room and usually cannot see the tables (or floor!). Dinner party on Tuesday, so I should be cleaning.
Maybe it's something with our name?
Another Nancy

patricej 08-21-2011 05:28 AM

a slob by any other name is PatriceJ.

there are enough many things i must do in life.

when it comes to things that are up to me, i do as i prefer.

i don't clean up until i feel like it.

i rarely feel like it.

Karen's Kreations 08-21-2011 05:31 AM

Tidy up? Close the door? Not me - I tidy up after the project is done so I can start messing up again. Otherwise it's pretty much of a mess.

Glassquilt 08-21-2011 05:34 AM

Clean up? I do if it's absolutely necessary.

Annaquilts 08-21-2011 05:35 AM

I kind of clean up but over time it slips full and becomes a mess so I must a slob too.

MissM 08-21-2011 05:37 AM

Uh, count me in the slob club...but I am not a hoarder. I work full time, have very little time to quilt, and I don't want to spend that time cleaning.

Julie in NM 08-21-2011 05:38 AM

working on scrappy projects so dining table is mess...big mess...terrible mess. I work full time so don't tidy up during process of latest project but DO clean up almost completely before starting new. Had to tidy up last night tho. In the mess lost scissors, seam ripper, pen 1*6 ruler, thread snippers 6*12 ruler 4*12 ruler 6.5*6*5...get the picture! So today finish tiding up and finsih mug rugs. That's what started the whole mess and I'm sticking to that story!

grammy Dwynn 08-21-2011 05:39 AM

Right now it is a BIG Mess

Lately I have had one project after another, plus sewing classes and mini retreats with friends.

Things are all over the place! One of these days I will clean it up. ;) :?

quiltingaz 08-21-2011 05:40 AM

I understand you. My sewing room is the messiest place in the house. I usually have to clear my cutting table whenever I need to use it and sometimes my ironing board. I keep telling myself that I need a container for all my little gadgets that are running free on my sewing table and are always falling on the floor. Is there any hope for us?

stitchinwitch 08-21-2011 05:42 AM

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh thanks for all who responded. We all envy you neat-niks who keep things tidy, but I sure wish I was in that category.......for the others.....'looks like I won't have to put a bag over my head after all and need to make one of those "enter by invitation only" signs on the door and LOCK it............no matter how we see it........"we are not alone"

grammyp 08-21-2011 05:42 AM

Guilty. I will make 2-3 projects before I clean up. I usually do a good clean after I clear out the scrap box and there are snips all over the floor. I must confess, I do have a housekeeper that comes once a week and he does vacuum and dump the trash for me. Now, if he would only return fabrics to the shelves for me......

I Agree. I use to keep everything spotless whole house. But now I stop to smell the Roses. I have retired with a attitude. I Don't Have a time clock any more why hurry & worry. Just take time to watch the sunrise or set & most of all Stop & Smell the Roses of Time with your Love One.

WHAT???? Housekeeper??? HE?????? Is that possible?????

Yarn or Fabric 08-21-2011 05:55 AM

I have been messy in my current space but I do want that to change in my new space. We're buying a new house and my craft room is going to be massive compared to what it is now - still smaller than some others I have seen here but definitely will be a step up for me.

I'm going to really try hard to keep it all nice and neat. I am having problems finding things in my mess right now so it has to change when I move.. and I'll also do a good destashing once I'm in place. I'm planning on bringing stuff to my quilt guild and having the ladies make donation quilts out of my destash materials...

Rebecca VLQ 08-21-2011 06:04 AM

I clean up like super-duper clean a few times a year. In between those times, I group like things together and move them out of my way.

Right now I'm filtering through fabric I thought I wanted, but now don't really want, except some of the stuff I didn't want before I do now, so there was one pile of sell-give away, and now there's two...

I tidy up after each sewing session. Can't stand clutter.
:)

MIJul 08-21-2011 06:08 AM

Patrice - you said it Perfectly!!!! That's me! :-)

Rose Marie 08-21-2011 06:10 AM

I do put away all notions, rulers etc.
Fabric can wait, floors can wait.

Granny Quilter 08-21-2011 06:10 AM

My sewing room looks like I am becoming a hoarder, so I moved the machine to the dining room table and work there! The sewing room door is always closed. It is too small to hold everything that is in it.

Karenowc 08-21-2011 06:14 AM

At home I usually leave a current project out - hoping to get back to it quickly. At my rented studio (because it's in an office complex) I'm good about cleaning up before I leave.

JeannieT 08-21-2011 06:15 AM

I am a neat and tidy hoarding slob. Not a surface slob but a hidden slob. I hide my hoard in the cabinets, not neatly. So it looks neat and tidy on the surface.

deedum 08-21-2011 06:20 AM

yes, I do both, must be the Gemini in me!

Cheri_J 08-21-2011 06:48 AM

I'm anal. When I've finished for the day or for the session, I put up all my rulers, organize my project pieces so they will be in order when I return. I have special containers for my notions that I use on a regular basis. I put away fabric when I finish cutting.

Now, the floor is another story. I only vaccum about once a month or until I can't stand it anymore.

Just Me... 08-21-2011 06:50 AM

Most of my house is very very clean. (I am OCD.) If my sewing room is that clean, I feel totally uninspired! ROFL

LisaGibbs 08-21-2011 07:27 AM

I am an OCD sort of person-put away and clean up after each project and even find myself cleaning up during a project if I am done with something. I have learned from past disasters, repurchasing items I already had and can't find, etc. that I get more done on projects if I am not always looking for something.

stitchinwitch 08-21-2011 07:30 AM

GASP!!

amandasgramma 08-21-2011 07:32 AM

It's MY room -- you can't make me clean it up!!!!!! I don't close the door cuz my computer is in here. I've accomplished the ability to TOTALLY IGNORE the mess!!!! :)
