I'm in the process of making a lap size Log Cabin quilt. The only quilting I've done has been stitch in a ditch.

My thought is to have someone else do "fancy" quilting on this quilt, although I don't know. Is "fancy" stitching done on Log Cabins or is it only in the ditch?

If it makes a difference I am putting it together as a Fields/Furrows pattern.

Thanks much,
Ginger

i've seen many log cabins quilted in the ditch and they turned out lovely. additionally, i've seen them with curved and swirly designs and still look beautiful. not much help, am i :)

I use circles when quilting log cabins.

It is up to you what you want. The quilting can impact the design and how the eye sees the quilt. Stitch in the ditch will reinforce the linear geometric pattern of the log cabin blocks.

Something curvier will soften the rectangular pattern of the block pieces.

If you want to emphasize the rows and furrows layout you could do dimensional quilting that follows the layout.

It is amazing how the quilting can change the look of the finished quilt.

Hmmm, does anyone have pictures I can look at? I tried googling and didn't come up with what I want to see.

Lisa--when you say "dimensional quilting that follows the layout" what do you mean?

Sorry--I've only made 3 quilts and that was years ago. I'm just getting back into this.....

Thanks again Ladies!
