ButterCream...was the toy sewing machine you found at the yard sale a miniture Singer? cause I still have mine. Its older than dirt...but it still works...by battery, electricity (if I can find the adapter), or in desperate times when the lights went out it has a little hand crank. My mother paid $25 for it. It was an incentive gift when she bought her new Singer (which she still has and it still works like new) from Montgomery Wards. I had already been sewing on her old black Singer (so old it didn't have backstitch) for a couple years, but that Christmas I was absolutely thrilled beyond belief. Not only did I get my very own singer...but I got one of my dad's boot boxes (huge box!) filled with hand sewn Barbie clothes and a new Barbie to wear them. Mom even used some fabric from a khaki colored pair of elephant bell bottoms (remember those?) that she had cut off my sister's and made an identical pair for my new Barbie. It was the best Christmas ever and my most memorable one. I was all of 6 years old. Yeah, I can honestly say sewing with your mom makes for lasting, memories!! I've started my 6 yr old hand sewing, making simple drawstring bags, but she's not quite ready for machine sewing yet. You'll know when yours is ready...and she love every moment she spends sewing with you. Even if its straight stitch hand sewing!! I keep Alicia, my 4 yr old, busy with a simple weaving loom (the over under over under kind) while Jazz and I sew. She does have some plastic needles that I let her "sew" on plastic canvas with too. Maybe that would keep your younger one happy and feeling involved too.

Heather, I know what you mean about your grandmother's short term memory. My aunt is not quite that bad but her memory is fading and even though no one has said what the problem is, we all know tha it is the same as your grandmother. That was the main reason tha I put the labl on the pansy quilt. Not for people to look and see who made it but more for her bebefit so that she will remember and know how much I care about her. You are fortunate to be close by and to be able to spend time with her. My aunt lives 1,000 miles away and I only see her once a year or so`. I have wonderful memories of this visit and that will have to do until I can see her again.Hats off to you for spending time with her.

Vicki, 1,000 miles is quite a ways away. I don't know what I would do if she lived that far away from me. I am sure you treasure those memories. I know what you mean about the label, that would be so nice for her. Does any of your family members live close to her? If it is starting to look like Dimentia or Alzheimer's Disease, medicine can greatly slow the progression down. I am not at all preaching to you, I just know that without grandma being on these medicines she would progress very quickly.

MOstf my family lives in the same town as my aunt including my Mom and their only brother and one othe sister that is about 15 years or so younger. I say younger because she is in her early 70's or just turned 70 whereas my aunt and my mom and her brother are all in their 80's. I have 3 sisters and a brother that live there also. I am the black sheep living in NC and it bugs my mom to no end. We have been here 20 years and have no plans to move back to Louisiana, but she can't accept that. I like it here and when I etire we will move to the wesern part of the state. thats why I did the label. AS far as medicine, no one really talks about what ails her let alone what medication she is taking. Her son goes over there every morning and every eveing to give her her medicine. Very sad but very touching also. I had a wonderful visit with her over Labor Day and probably won't see her till next October. I can't afford to fly over ore often and I doubt that her kids would let her come here.

Well, I finally remembered to take my camera so here are a few pictures of the scarecrow that my grandma and I made. It is still hard for me to believe I am teaching her how to sew...well helping her re-learn to sew. She doesn't remember how but when I watch her sewing, she knows it, you can tell by the way her hands work but her brain is telling her she doesn't. I wish I would have had my camera the day we were sewing.

Well...actually March is National Quilting Month. We could always designate October as the "extended" version of March haha or a different category. lol.
