I did a very dumb thing the other day, and unfortunately it cost me my machine. I had a nifty little computerized Brother machine that had a ridiculous amount of beautiful stitches to choose from and I was very attached to it. I do not know what posessed me to do it, but I decided to take my machine and the kids' laundry down the basement stairs at the same time. This was a very, very bad plan. My machine ended up taking the express route down the stairs and smashed on the floor at the bottom. I cried. Then cried some more.

My fiance knew how upset I was and spent an hour on Kijiji (local trading post) trying to find a replacement machine for me. He ended up taking his b-day money and getting me a temporary machine until I can get a new one. (It turned out there is a problem with the feed dogs, but I was so touched by his actions I didn't tell him).

So, until the end of February, my mother was kind enough to lend me her machine. I think the definition of love is in these two's action :)

dakotamaid 02-09-2010 05:33 AM

No kidding!! I think you are blessed!

Ms Grace 02-09-2010 05:38 AM

So sorry about your machine.
Hope you can find a nice replacement.

Dawn Hendrix 02-09-2010 05:41 AM

OO soo sorry to hear this.... We do learn from our mistakes tho.... It is amazeing when others step up and show us they care and love us when we least expect it!

reneebobby 02-09-2010 05:45 AM

Sorry about your machine but he's a keeper.

Jingle 02-09-2010 06:19 AM

I have no basement and a good thing I would end up in the position of your machine. I have 4 back up machines, I would go nuts without one. Get another good one when you can.

dkabasketlady 02-09-2010 06:59 AM

So sorry about your machine. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't sew. I have two back-up machines. You have two very special people in your life.

Elisabeth J 02-09-2010 09:03 AM

Just be thankful you didn't take the express route like your machine.

kaelismom80 02-09-2010 09:17 AM

actually, i did that a couple of days prior to that happening. cut up my hand and have a nasty bruise on my thigh to prove it. it is pretty shades of blue and purple right now.

kwhite 02-09-2010 09:19 AM

You know if you contact your homeowners insurance it may be covered. That is an expensive break. So sorry.

Boston1954 02-09-2010 09:30 AM

I am so sorry to hear what happened to your machine, but what a wonderful thing for Mom and Sweetie to do for you.

Quilter7x 02-09-2010 09:34 AM

Oh my goodness, this isn't something any of us expect to happen. So sorry that happened to you, but you sure are surrounded by love!

amma 02-09-2010 09:37 AM

(((HUGS))) I am so sorry!!!
Awwww what a sweetie :D:D:D He is a keeper for sure!!!

chris_quilts 02-09-2010 09:45 AM

beachlady 02-09-2010 01:40 PM

Sorry your machine took a tumble, but glad that you did not follow it! Nice Mom and fiance.

sewcrazygirl 02-09-2010 01:54 PM

Oh I am so sorry too!! What machine was it? Maybe you can tell your dealer this story and he will have pity on you and get you a great deal on a new machine.

Rachel 02-09-2010 01:57 PM

so sorry about the machine. It would have made me cry too, but so glad to hear you're surrounded by real love...

mimee4 02-10-2010 07:28 AM

Oh, I am soo sorry to hear about your machine - YOU are ok, I trust. That's a fear I have - going down the steps at a LQS carrying my machine. You are blessed with nice people in your family.

Good for you! And congratualtions on your engagement!

Olivia's Grammy 02-10-2010 09:33 AM

I am crying with you. But look at the love you were shown. I tried to take one of my machines up the stairs in a case designed for scrap booking. The handle broke off. Fortunately I was only on the second or third step so no harm to the machine.

redpurselady 02-10-2010 09:37 AM

Sometime pawn shops have good buys on machines and will let you try them out. Sewing machine stores usually have used machines that people have traded in. That is how I started out on my quilting journey. Good luck in finding the perfect machine for you.

NauDeeGal 02-10-2010 09:47 AM

So sorry to hear about your sewing machine taking the express route. I am glad that you didn't go with it! You are surrounded by people that truly love you! That is so sweet what each of them did and are doing for you! Let's see what you get at the auction maybe another blessing there too!

Oklahoma Suzie 02-10-2010 12:45 PM

So sorry to hear about your machine. I hope you get a new one soon.

JUNEC 02-11-2010 04:59 AM

I don't know how RIP your machine is, but is there a sewing machine repair shop in your area? Joann Fabric sells machines. They also repair them. You might want to ck them out. They sometimes have trade ins for sale.

Good luck, I know it is sad when you lose someone that is that close to you

kaelismom80 02-11-2010 05:02 AM

unfortunately the computer component of my machine is bent almost in half, and it no longer recognizes that my foot pendal is plugged into the machine. i am however looking forward to finding a new one :)

Dorothy of Kansas 02-11-2010 05:08 AM

My condolences on your loss of your machine. Hopefully, you'll get something even better!! Kiss your mom and honey for being so good to you, too!! Congrats on getting your ring, too. He sounds like a keeper for sure!!

OmaForFour 02-11-2010 06:58 AM

Go to EBay and look for your particular machine. You may be lucky!
My son in law dropped my daughter's very expensive camera in the ocean a couple of years ago. They happened to tell a friend about it. The friend went on EBay and found the exact camera at a fraction of the original cost. The friend also was able to get the camera and do the work to make sure it worked like new since that is his expertise.
If you find the machine, you could have someone work on it for you to "reconstitute it" if it needs anything. Also, on EBay, the seller must tell you the truth about it or you can send it back to them.
I know that shipping expensive on heavier items but I did buy a Brother machine on EBay a few years back and the seller paid the shipping. Perhaps you could work out something whereby the seller would pay the shipping if the machine was not what he/she siad it was.
Anyway, it is worth looking into UNLESS you are going to invest in a Bernina or something. However, it sounds like you were in love with that machine.

OmaForFour 02-11-2010 06:59 AM

Also, sometimes these shops have machines that are actually brand new except they were used as demonstrators at shows and are very much discounted.

lindy 02-11-2010 07:09 AM

Sounds like you need to stay off those stairs! What a wonderful blessing you have in have in your life! There aren't many men who would be so good to their woman.

Aurora 02-11-2010 07:14 AM

Try a local repairman. Mine had about 25 older machines for sale, less than $100. He also had a new Janome. There may be other options besides Wal-Mart as I found out after buying a new Singer for $199.99. I bought a 301A for $75 and a 457 Stylist ZigZag for $85. I love the little 301A, I haven't tried the 457 as yet (need to get some bobbins). I found a guy on eBay who sells 30 bobbins (Featherweight/301A) for $11.99. He also has bobbins for the 457 (30 for $11.99) as well. He has all types of bobbins available and I got the 60 I bought within three days. Next week I will order 60 for the 457 and I will be all set.

This might be another option if you have a reliable repairman who has used/cleaned/serviced machines for sale.

Ouch:< Another place is looking on Craigs list. That way you can buy used, local and not mess or pay for shipping. I've been scouring my local CR for a back-up. People list TONS of Singers, Whites and Brothers...

wichypoo 02-11-2010 08:59 AM

O honey, i just want to give ya a hug. I feel so bad for you. What precious loved ones you have..

wishiwerequilting 02-11-2010 09:20 AM

congrats on your engagement! I'm so sorry to hear of the accident, but as others have said, you have many other blessings in your life. I hope you can replace with something soon. Please stay away from the stairs!!

When you are ready for that new machine, there are several internet sites that are good. I always use allbrands.com. I have purchased 4 machines for family and friends and never had a single problem. I have also purchased irons, coffee pots and sewing machine accessories. Most shipping is free on their machines and they always run specials. Know what you need, whether it be decorative stitches, embroidery or a good solid quilting/sewing machine. There are several Janome computerized machines on sale from 3$00- and up.

I agree. Try your homeowner insurance. My granddaughter spilled bleach on my DD NEW living room carpet and they replaced it for her. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Good luck!!!

I am glad you were not hurt..physically, anyways.. I would definately call my insurance company and ask them IF it is covered by the policy....tell them it was dropped and broken by accident.....and I hope you get a wonderful new machine to replace it! You have 2 super good people who love you and that is worth so much!

JudeWill 02-11-2010 01:18 PM

Oh, I'm so sorry! I could cry for you! It's so hard to stop kicking yourself after you do something like that. I could see myself doing that so easily. I carry a riciculous amount of stuff to keep from making two trips sometimes! :(

Marcia 02-11-2010 01:33 PM

I wanted to cry too, just reading your story. There are so many ways to replace your machine-Ebay, Craig's List, a trade in at a Sew and Vac shop, etc. I hope you are able to replace yours soon. In the meantime, it sounds like your mom and your honey are looking out for you. :-D
