I want to make a Storm at Sea lap size quilt. Using 16" finished blocks I would need to make 12 blocks. I can find a lot of information about making the block, but I can't find any information on how much fabric I need to make a complete quilt. Can anyone help me?

Single or double pattern?
Back of the envelope - you'd need approx 4.5 yards total. How many colors do you want, and in which positions in the block? |
We have to know how many fabrics you plan to use and the color placement. There are many different versions of Storm at Sea and endless ways to assemble it to make different secondary designs. Which pattern are you looking at?

I'm thinking the traditional layout using 3 colors (a light, medium, dark). Thanks for helping me. This board is awesome and quilters are the best!

Below is what Quilt Pro came up with based on 16" blocks set 3 across & 4 down. 3 color Storm at Sea 3 color Storm yardage |
Wow - that is fantastic information - Nicely done.

http://bunchofbloomers.com/quilt_stormatsea.shtml EQ is notoriously fickle when calculating non-square/rectangle shapes - and this block has a ton of HST, HRT and diamonds. In descending order of fabric requirements, you'll need the most light and the least of the dark. I've even padded the EQ numbers just a tad more: Light 1.75 yds Med 1.5 yds Dark 1.25 yards Pretty close to the back of the envelope. But I'd probably buy a bit more just to be safe. ;-) And if you're going scrappy, like the picture, you've got a bit more leeway - if you run out, you can just get another FQ. What are your plans for piecing? Templates, rotary cutting, paper-piecing? Just curious. |
Thank you. Storm at Sea is on my to-do list. I prefer the version than MTS posted the link to but it was easier to work up with block borders instead of sashing and it this should give basic information for a 3 color version.

Hi BK - waving!
To Anna - notice that there are different colorations in the two samples - BK's rendition and the picture I linked to - which result in different fabric requirements . Of course, if you get 2 yards of each value - you'll be fine.  |
