I also wondered how you do a surgeons knot. I usually take a stich then take another stich and then tie. I have used yarn and also emb thread. Leave ends long enough, too short makes it come out easier. Will keep watching this thread for answer to surgeons knot. BrendaK

There are several tutorials on "how to tie a quilt" if you google the topic.

I have quilts that my grandmother made ages ago - and the ties are still intact.

Surgeon's knot explained. Best way to tie a quilt. I use pearl cotton to tie mine.

I have tied many quilts with yarn and there are some that are still around after 30 + yrs. I would not use yarn on a baby quilt because of the fuzzies but the others will be great. That is what I learned to do many years ago from my wonderful grandma.

I have used 6 strand embroidery thread to tie a quilt. It works alright but I've had them untie during washing. I will have to check out how to make that surgeons knot.

My grandmother used yarn to tie her quilts. They are still holding tight some 40 yrs later and so are her quilts :shock: even though we use them all the time.
