I love planning. I love choosing fabrics and choosing a pattern. I have many ideas written down.
I don't mind cutting the fabric. I enjoy sewing the pieces together and watching it come alive and take the shape that I envisioned. But I really really dislike squaring up the blocks. I'm making a Friendship Star. It's going to have 42 blocks (I think). Each block has 1 solid square and 8 HST. I detest squaring up those HST's before I sew them all together to form the block. And it's putting a damper on my quilting this weekend. I keep taking breaks. I wish I could hire someone to square my squares! |
I wish I could hire someone to cut everything out because I am always crooked and then do my binding too! :)
|
I enjoy cutting.
|
that is what sewing buddies are good for would it be just great to get together for the day with a few sewing buddies then we could take turns having quilting slaves for the day LOL
|
I have no problem with any part of making a quilt until I start to hand sew the binding on the back of the quilt. This is the worst part of making a quilt but the most satisfying when I am done.

Nothing I hate about quilting....really like the whole process !

I love the planning stage....picking out the perfect pattern and then finding the fabrics that will make the pattern come alive.....I hate cutting.....there just has to be an easier way!
|
I like most everything except hand work. Hand work requires you to sit still - I'm not very good at that (never have been!). High energy. My sewing room is set up so that I have to move around the room constantly to cut, sew, iron, etc - I like it that way!!
Even when I'm on the computer I'm constantly getting up and down. |

Too bad you live so far north (I'm in Naples). I'd happily square up your blocks if you would kick me in the pants and force me to actually make something!
|
I hate cutting out but I love sewing them together.
|
I love the planning and selecting fabrics. I have a wishlist a mile long, and several projects already cut up and ready to go. If I'd stop adding new ones, I might get to them! LOL I don't even mind binding.
What I dislike is ironing, especially the backs. I don't have much room and it's not convenient to work in any other room. Plus my ironing board is too wobbly, but I can't spend the money for a new one right now. I can't believe how expensive those got...$50-60 for one that looks sturdy. |
Cutting is not my favorite but once I get started I don't mind. I've decided I really like piecing together the blocks. But when it comes time to put them together with sashing and borders I don't enjoy that. Right now I have five stacks of blocks that I need to put together.
|
I hate clipping all the strings and getting them off of the top before it goes to the quilters. I don't much care for the pressing part because I feel like I am slowing down. But it is really the strings that I hate.
|
Squaring up the blocks usually forces me to change my blade which makes things go a lot quicker. I really don't like the cutting, pressing and basting. I used to hate the quilting, but have grown to enjoy it now that I've learned how to do it correctly via the kind folks here on the board.
|
I love creating my own patters, cutting, piecing, designing how to quilt it, and I don't mind binding at all.
I don't love machine quilting it, but in my mind it wouldn't be my quilt if I didn't do it all. Hands down I really dislike choosing fabric. If I walk in a quilt shop and the salesperson isn't friendly and helpful, I just walk out. |
I enjoy choosing pattern & fabrics. :-D I don't mind cutting, squaring up blocks isn't a lot of fun but necessary so I can join the blocks to see the design emerge :-D :-D, DD helps with layering, quilting is fun, BUT I really, really hate doing the binding
Doghouse Mom, I'm like you. I have to get up & move. I have RA & just stiffen up so badly when I sit for more than a few minutes. |
I love the whole process of making quilts, it's the distractions (eg housework, shopping etc) that sometimes frustrates me. However, that's life!
|
I HATE Binding!!!!
|
I don't really enjoy the actual quilting part! I love piecing - it's probably my favorite part!
|
I love it all except for the pressing - I do it quick and I know I need improvement but I am getting there.
|
I love just about everything with quilting..But the one thing I do not love is cutting fabric..I am always so scared that I am going to mess it up and cut it wrong..
|
I enjoy all of it except the cutting. I used to even enjoy handquilting but the hands just don't hold out for long any more so it takes me a lot longer to do it.

I hate squaring up the block. This takes forever! I can't sit for long periods so I do a few than go do something else and do a few more. Takes me longer to square them up than to do everything else.
|
I love it all, especially right now when I can't do it.
Hand surgery!!!! but soon I hope... |

MZStitch I'm with you. I hate choosing the fabric. I'm always afraid that there is something better that I haven't seen yet or someone will say 'why'd you put THAT colour in there?' I know that it is MY quilt but I am just not confident with colours. Unfortunately, I don't have a LQS nearer than 30 miles and work (while paying for my fabric obsession) does limit my time.
BUT I LOOOVE designing. And I must admit that, given the time to play (and create) I'm not bad at it--especially when I know that the cost of the fabric is minimal and the local animal shelter doesn't care that it is a creation-gone-wonky. I actually look for super-cheap fabric to keep on hand to try out new patterns or something of my own creation. Oh and yeah--that housework thing--don't like that much either--or laundry--or yard work--or just work (oh, yeah guess I have to keep doing that one--pays for the previously mentioned obsession) |
I love everything about putting a quilt together except for the hand sewing. I give all my quilts and projects to my friend's 90 year old mother who just loves to hand sew. She won't take any money either so I send a bag of candy each time, which she absolutely loves.
|
I'm the same - I try and convince myself its because I have enjoyed making the quilt so much I don't want it to come to an end!!!!!

I love most all of it, really love shopping for the fabric though! :)

Gathering fabrics is probably the part I most dislike. Mostly because I live in an area that has few quilt shops and fabric stores and I usually have to do a lot of traveling to find all the fabrics that I need to put a quilt together. I love the rest of the process, even sewing bindings on by hand. Hand work is so relaxing for me.

Use Marti Michell templates - no squaring up needed! Engineered corners fit perfectly and 1/4" seam allowances are easy peasy.
|
I used to dislike selecting fabrics because I would get overwhelmed by the options. Now I just buy from a collection. My closest shop has many fat quarter packs that make selecting fabric much easier. If I need yardage, I'll take a fat quarter pack and select the fabrics for yardage from that. Plus, the saleswomen are very friendly and happy to help. Works for me!
Now if someone would just sew on the boarders for me. That's the part that trys my patience. |
I like the whole process, but I especially like using all the fabric I have with nothing left over. I will sew little pieces together in order to get the size I want.
I have a large stash but I am a very frugal quilter and try not to waste anything. |
I love shopping for fabric, choosing a pattern and then abandoning it, even love squaring blocks. Do not love binding. Not.

I made a pressing board that sits on my table beside my machine. It is made from a piece of plywood and covered with batting and cotton duck material. It is the best tool in my room. It is just 1 foot by 2 feet. |
