My Mom found a Singer Treadle in the attic of their house and she loaned it to me to make my babies Pajamas. I learned quickly not to make mistakes that needed ripping out, the seams were so tight. That was over 30 years ago and now I have a Singer Treadle I bought at Goodwill that reminds me of the one from so long ago. I named her after Mom, Alice Mae.

I learned to sew on my mother's Singer Featherweight (now my 40 year old daughter is the proud owner) In 1959! the bobbin section fell apart and needed repair. At that time Singer Co would give you a 'spare' machine to use while your machine was being repaired. The Singer salesman left a Singer 401A Slant-O-Matic and I would come home from school every day excited to use it. When the time day came to receive my Mother's repaired machine and return the Slant-O-Matic I thought it would be sad but to my surprise both machines were sitting there in our dining room/sewing room. My parents decided to buy a new machine for me (only) I became the proud owner of this new Machine and I still use it every day. My mother stated it was my Christmas Gift, my Birthday Gift, my Graduation from High School Gift. I was so happy. We often joked that instead of changing thread we would change machines. My High School just celebrated our 50th Reunion so my machine celebrated 50 years also.

My momma bought me a basic Brother sewing machine for Christmas a few years ago. It was the first machine I ever used, I still use it. I'm in the market for something with more bells and whistles. I might go for a higher end Brother, I really do love the machine.

Singer Slant-o-Matic 603 Special (circa 1963). It was my Mom's machine and when she bought a new one in the late '70s, she gave me the 603. I still have it and use it now and then. It's a great machine!

WOW what a wonderful trip we have all had down memory lane.
I remember with mums treadle if you went backwards the thread broke so you had to start all over again, one day I broke the thread so many times I said bother it and got a clout around my ear, when I asked what that was for she said for saying what i did and when i said I only said bother it she replied well that makes up for all the times I don't hear you. :lol: |
