Default question about old thread

I have received about ten spools of thread from an older lady's sewing supplies. The thread is on wooden spools, and is labeled "Lily Embroidery and Sewing 150 yds Mercerized * Boil Proof" on one end of the spool and "# S", with that number seeming to represent the color. The thread is variegated, and wound onto the spool to form stripes. It is very pretty!

I did the thread test...and the thread snaps very easily! Rats! My question is whether it is snapping easily because it is a very fine thread, and would still be suitable for using in light duty uses, or whether someone out there knows this thread, and can tell me that I definitely need to get rid of it because it has perished.

Can anyone help me?

I don't know the answer to your question but even if it's old it would all look cute in a pretty jar or hanging on a sewing room Christmas tree...

I never think of things like this! Yes, it would make lovely little ornaments! Thanks!

Great idea using the spools as ornaments!

If the thread snaps/breaks when you give it a tug, I probably wouldn't use it for sewing.
But then.. I'm no thread expert.

Old thread, just like old fabric, will disappoint you in the long run. It won't hold up like new thread. I had a bunch of old thread from my mom and I just removed it and saved the wooden spools.

I'd probably tuck it in the refrigerator for a couple weeks and see if the moisture helps restore it. Even if that makes it less brittle, I'd probably only use it for hand-stitching on something that wouldn't get heavy use. And I agree with everyone else -- it would be lovely on display. I'm jealous LOL!!
