A lot would depend on the backing. I like to match my thread to the back if the back is a solid color. I think the gray looks very nice with the coral, but I guess this would be the time to experiment with thread changing, since it's practice.

I like the grey. I quilt almost everything with grey thread. It blends with everything.

Thank you everybody! i like the idea of making a sample and trying it out. I may just use the gray for now and try two colors on another depending on the sample. The back is mostly the blue Palm tree fabric with a pieced coral and a gray stripe. I do love that coral fabric...will have to use it again!

I like the gray but if you want a pop of color, you could use coral... which would be something I'm likely to do. I think you should just stick to one color as it might look odd to switch colors in the straight line quilting you are doing.

I use clear monofilament on most of my quilts because I find the colors distracting. I want the quilting to be a texture that doesn't compete with the piecing.

Your question boils down to doing what you want. Your choices are certainly equal in achieving a lovely finish. I know I like to change things up and sometimes I match are areas I am quilting if I want the piecing to stand out. Other times I go for the contrasting color of threads if I want the quilting to take center stage. I think one of the factors has to do with thread tension. To change colors I assume you would use just one color in the bobbin. So, is the tension balanced? To me, that is important.

That is a really good point. I am using Superior thread now and don't own any coral thread. I do have a tendency to complicate matters so maybe I should just step back, stick to the original plan and save experimenting for another time.

I personally like the color blue that is the sea. Even the green from the palm trees. But I do prefer the blue for a baby/child quilt. Kids are in to colors! Just a thought. I would use the grey or tan for a "formal" quilt, but a brighter color for a child's quilt. Edie

I tend to stay with one neutral color for the whole quilt. The grey looks nice.
