I am getting ready to make a rail fence quilt. On my first quilt i just cut the blocks (4 patch) using scissors. Can i cut the strips for my rail fence with scissors or should i use a rotary cutter? Thanks for your advice.

I think the strips would be more accurate cut with a rotary cutter.

I get smoother edges with a rotary cutter - I tend to "hack" when I'm using a scissor.

However - generations have made lovely quilts cutting the fabrics with scissors.

So - if you cut accurately and smoothly, scissors are also good.

Go with the rotary cutter! You will be sooo happy you did. You will cut fabric in seconds! It is so much easier

Rotary, rotary, rotary. Scissors are so much slower and tiring. Rotary cutters are a great invention and a gift to quilters.

Rotary cutter for sure! Cut the strips the width of the fabric, sew the 3 long strips together (alternate your sewing direction), then re-cut into your blocks.

You can use scissors, but I agree that I would find it difficult to be accurate.

I vote rotary, I very rarely use my scissors to cut fabric anymore.

A rotary cutter would be much more accurate.
