Default questions on a quilt

Hi everyone,

One of these days, I will buy enough fabric to finish a project. With that said, here is the problem, I have a quilt that I am working on, and the blocks came through a neighborhood block exchange, and I don't have any extra fabric of the block that I did. I am going to ask some of the ladies if they still have theirs. If they don't then I need to change plans. One plan that I have is that I am doing sashing between the blocks, and then they will be intermingled with snowball blocks. The snowball blocks will have a feathered wreath quilted in them. I don't have a camera to take a picture so here is what I am thinking:

the quilt will be 88x96 (queen size). It will have a border that will be the same color as the sashing between the rows of blocks. So row 1 will be sashing, block, sashing, snowball, sashing, block, snowball. Then row 2 will alternate where there is a block, there will be a snowball, then row 3 will be the same as row 1 and row 4 will equal row 2. I hope this is all making sense.

there will be two borders on top and bottom. One will be the same color as the border on the sides, and then the other will be the same color as the sashings between the blocks. Here is a question for that, I may not have enough of that color, and because it was bought like 2 or 3 years ago, it may be hard to find. Do my borders have to match exactly, or can I use a color that is similar.

The snowball blocks are made of Muslin, so I thought I could try to match that. I am just trying to make this work. It is for my brother in law and I want it to be a special quilt for him.

Thanks for your help and advice.

You don't say what colors are in your quilt. I think you will have to play with it and see if you have anything that would look okay. Otherwise, I think I would get fabric so that it is all the same.

Always remember: It's YOUR Quilt....if you think it's good, then it's good. Go with your gut, Girl; and it will be GREAT!

Wing it and try it. Depends on the look you are after and what you can live with. Do just a couple to see how it looks. Don't be afraid to try something different.

Could you put that color on say, the two vertical sides and then another color that would go with the quilt on the horizontal ends?

I think I would pick something completely different for the borders. I use my leftovers for my backing. Any repeat of a fabric from the front instantly makes the back match.

Use what ever you can. To use a fabric similar to the one you maybe short of is right in the tradition of the pioneers. I have made borders from the scraps of the blocks in a quilt. Pick out a few colors from the quilt and go for it if it works for you! And no borders do not have to match.

I hope one day you can post a pic' of this quilt and others too!

You might consider a completely different fabric for the top and bottom borders--but one that coordinates with your other fabrics. It's hard to say without seeing what you're working with, but I agree that the borders do not have to be the same fabric as used in the blocks or sashing. As long as you are pleased with the overall look, then it works.
