I have a king size log cabin pieced quilt and a postage stamp carpeted floor (nope, not even a king size bed [I'm making it as a surprise for my sister and she had a king size bed) . any suggestions how to lay backing, middle fibre and pieced top to set for hand quilting . . . had a bigger floor last time but just moved and haven't a clue how to approach this . . suggestions please . . .

Try your local library or a church. Often they will let you use their tables. Push them together to get a big enough surface.
Do you have a local quilt shop that would have room to lay it out?

    Good Luck

Is there a library or church nearby that has big tables?? Just a thought.

I use my library when I have something bigger than my floor. I did find out that if I wanted to reserve their conference room, I would have to pay $175.00. However, if I call first and nothing is scheduled for that day I can use it free of charge.

Here's Sharon Schamber's method of basting (Part 1 of 2):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhwNylePFAA
You don't need the footprint of the entire quilt in order to baste it.

If that doesn't work for you (or you don't have enough room to do it), then onto Plan B:

As the top is already together, the usual Quilt As You Go methods won't really work here.

So you could next try the "Divide and Conquer" method (also the book title).
Marti Michel (http://www.frommarti.com/QIS.shtml) also recently did a book on this technique, where you quilt in sections - I think it could work for hand quilting as well.
More info on both can easily be found via a Google search.

Is there a LQS that might let you use a large spot?
