Default Quilt Crinkly Look after Washing

To avoid the crinkly look, I prewashed fabric and Quilters Dream select batting for a quilt which I completed today. I washed the quilt and it came out with the crinkly look. I used cold water and a gentle drying cycle. I took pictures before and after and the difference is very noticeable. The fabric was purchased at Joann's by my young granddaughter for her first project. She did all the piecing, but I quilted the top. What could have caused this?

Assuming that you prewashed it the same way that you washed it after, I'm not sure what would have caused it to happen again. Good luck figuring it out.

I wash my quilts to get the crinkly look but I have never seen a quilt that was washed and dried look like it was before washing. You may try slightly tugging the quilt while pressing, that may help.

Take the quilt out of the dryer before it is totally dry and stretch it out on the carpet or on a big bed and pin it in place. Leave it there to dry. That will help

I block my quilts while still damp and I have very little crinkle. I use Hobbs 80/20 batt and I use the carpet in my spare room to lay my quilt out on. I stab rust proof pins through the quilt and into the carpet to get it taut and leave it until dry.

The Quilters Dream cotton batting that i bought (several years ago) said to NOT wash it.

In small print on the back side of the label.

I have a friend who does not like the crinkly quilts either. She washes and irons her batting. That way they stay perfectly flat.

If you use cotton batting you could iron the quilt after it is washed. Not so if you use polyester, the iron would melt the batting. What about using a steamer? I have one but haven't tried it out yet.
