So proud that all of my binding is now sewn on (by hand on the back), however, I then discovered a HUGE problem! I know how it happened...I miss one side of the binding when machining it on the quilt. I found this unsightly area upon inspection AFTER I had done all of the hand sewing.

Is there an easy way to fix this? I can't SID to save my life. Should I just pull out that section of stitching to fix it?

Anxious for some help.

Sorry for your problem. I would see if I could re-attach (machine) the missed area. Which would mean some un-sewing. Good luck

Yep, just pull it out and hope that you don't have to pull the whole thing off, sad to say, sometimes that will happen if we don't sew it all on at the same time.

If it's a big section I would remove the hand stitching and machine sew the edge again. If it is a small 3 inch section? I would carefully ladder stitch the binding back to the front of the quilt by hand. The hand ladder stitch is invisible when done properly.

if you don't want to rip out your hand stitching, then you could use blind stitches on the front, like you would for applique, to attach the loose part. Or, you could do a decorative machine stitch on the front all along the edge of the binding all around the quilt - it will look like you planned it and no one will be the wiser!

Thanks Ladies. I like the last 2 ideas best (no one ever WANTS to rip out stitching!)

Tartan - it is a small section, about an inch or so. Think I will look up that method before I start ripping.

Alleyoop1 - The machine stitch would work well on any other quilt I was doing. This one is just too special. Memory quilt from my Dad's shirts. The quilt is named "Len2" Len squared as in the math symbol. But I do really love the idea should I ever make this mistake again!!

i did that a few quilts age but in several places???how ---did my penance and unsewed --- one of my fellow quilters says she presses the binding away from the quilt prior to hand sewing the back this way you pick up areas not caught in the sewing and easily fixed--i do this always it has saved a lot of extra work

Thanks. Yes, I picked out the problem area and opened it up. Knotted off the handstitching on both end then ran the bad spot thu the machine again. Less than an hour in total to fix and I feel soooo much better!

Jemma - thanks for that tip. It will solve this in future.
