I didn't make the blocks the same, just used what the fabric would cut- and when I put them together they were also random...so the "split rail" pattern wasn't the normal.

I have 3 grandsons, and each has a favorite color -- red, orange and green. They love planes, trains and automobiles; animals -- dogs and horses, especially; the outdoors -- camping, fishing; sports -- football, baseball, soccer. A 2-color 9-patch alternating with snowballs with a focus fabric and the 2 colors would be quick and easy, as would alternating solids and prints.

Every year I make small quilts for children 6-18yo. It is always hard to make something for an older boy. I just found some great outer space fabric I am going to use for borders and maybe the center of stars. I made a Tardis quilt for a teen girl at her request and it was a BIG hit with her friends. I also lean to earth colors for older boys and animal prints. Wildlife and dogs and cats Good luck. It is so nice of you to make a quit for these boys

I may be coming to this party too late but what about food? There's some great food prints to be paired with plain colored fabrics. I made a young man a quilt using the Michael Miller prints of sexy ladies on skis. He had a skiing accident and was recovering. It was a hit with him and his friends.

I made a quilt for my 13 year old grandson and he loved it, it was the zipper quilt from Missouri star quilt company, it was a fast and easy quilt to make, the quilt that I am referring to is the one that you see when my name comes up.. I made it in real bright colors and used a jelly roll as everything is 2.5 inch strips.. you can look up the tutorial on Missouri star quilt company site..It is so nice of you to do this for the boys, and as far as the boys liking or not liking a quilt, I am sure they would love to have one of the very own..good luck

I enjoy using men's shirts cut up for simple blocks. Results are masculine and comfy.

I agree with Snooze...I think a blue jean quilt would be great. I've even seen them where they incorporate the back pockets in the quilt. You should be able to find some really inexpensive jeans at a thrift store like Goodwill or Salvation Army.

I had to make a quilt in about a week for my DD's mother in law who was going back to Germany after a brief visit here & I made the Yellow Brick Road pattern. It turned out really pretty & was easy to make.
