My Mom saw my denim rag quilt and now she would like one of her own, but not of denim. She said she wanted it out of the same fabric that I made her sweatshirt jacket out of (batiks). So my question is has anyone made a batik rag quilt and how does it hold up? Does is blossom as well as any other cotton fabric?

Thanks for your help. :)

I have made a few of the denim rag quilts. Just to make sure I was sewing it correctly, I made a small 2ft x 2ft mini quilt. I put it by the washer and it went in with the towel washer/dryer loads for a couple of weeks to see how it "fluffed". The dog claimed it after my experiment. So, my suggestion is make a litte one out of scraps and see what happens. Hugs!
PS Dont forget to clean out the lint trap during the first couple of dryer runs. I set a timer for every 15 min, and it was full of little strings.

I have only made a flannel rag quilt for a baby so I can't help you uch there. I would think it would be okay but I agree with FF above, make a small one and see how it turns out first.

I've only made rag quilts out of flannel. It blossoms and rags so nicely. Definitely check lint tray often during the first several washings and dryings. Good luck.

I know that Batiks are usually a tighter weave than standard cotton. A small test one is probably a great idea to see your fabric will fray.

Batik won't "rag" well. you can make a quilt and clip the exposed seams, but that's it.

Thank you for all the replies. I'll try to make up a small sample and see what it does. I too have only made them with flannel or denim. Wish me luck cause if not, I'm back to what colors fabrics to use

I found some batik flannel (didn't even know they made it), so I can use that for the back and middle (I want it to blossom alot) but what to use on the front?

I did one that was flannel on the bottom and middle, but used straight cotton on the top. I cut my fringe about 1/2-3/4" apart and carried on. After a couple of washes, it blossomed beautifully. Yes the cotton does not blossom like the flannel, but, by fringing it smaller as opposed to the 1" apart, it worked out well.

batik's do not ravel/fray the way regular cottons do or flannels. they are too tight of a weave to make good raggy quilts. you would need to clip...really close, do all of the fraying by hand. looser weave fabrics work best, like flannels and homespuns

This is very sound advice from ckcowl!!!! Batiks don't ravel.
