If I am concerned about a fabric bleeding, I wet it in hot water and lay it on a white paper towel. This is the method that Marti Michell suggests and if it works for her, then it works for me.

Retayne sets the dyes in previously untreated fabrics and Synthrapol is used to keep bleeding fabrics from accepting the loose dyes in the washwater.

So if I have a quilt made I should use Synthrapol and fabric I will use in a quilt should use Retayne before using. I now have heard licensed fabrics are very bad to bleed.
