Default "Signing" a quilt on the back

    Hello everyone,
I am not on the forum often at all, but know where to come for THE answer to anything related to the quilting world! I saw ( and didn't save ) a photo of a quilt back that was "signed" on a separate piece (made with love, or something like that), and stitched into the binding. Can anyone lead me to the tutorial for or tell me how to make this little tag so that it stays in permanently, or have seen something that works better? Needing to complete one for a granddaughter! Thanks in advance for the great answers that I know are coming!

Not sure I can help but I have seen all info that maker wanted embroidered on the binding. They used an embroidery machine but it could be done by hand. I was done very nicely and did not detract from the look at all. This I would think would work great for reversible quilts. I have not used it but it is always in the back of my mind to try.

In the binding once I embroidered Sweet Dreams, Sleep tight, etc on three of the edge. And for a "tag" people put who the maker was, the year and why it was made. I don't know if there are any rules, I also include the pattern and who designed it as somewhere down the line someone will ask who designed the pattern..............mostly I think you can add what ever you want. I also include my city............not that my quilts will last until the next century. But as I have purchased some antique quilts I have wondered the location.............calla/Sue

If you don't want to hand embroider it, you can embroider with a regular sewing machine and a darning or FMQ foot. I just got a darning foot for low shank machines and managed to write my name with it. Practice first though.
Another idea is get a label or patch made up. There are places that will embroider patches and labels with whatever you want on them.

I've seen information entered into a block on the front and a special block on the back that was embroidered. I made my niece one when she had her baby years ago. Looked like a pocket on the back with double ric rac for trim on the top of the pocket. Pull the other row of ric rac and you can put the label out and read it. It tucks nicely in. If you want to hide the label just don't put any ric rac or trim. Just make it look like a part of the block. I've seen labels sewn into part of the sashing. Just used a washable pen then handsewed the letters.

There is a tutorial on QB on using your embroidery fonts on the binding. Bonnie Hunter folds a light square in half and sews the L shaped edges into the back corner when sewing on the binding.

You could probably google "quilt labels" and come up with lots of ideas....instead of embroidery, lots of folks use fabric markers too.
