Default square size

going to make a patchwork quilt and I'm wondering if I make 12" (finished) squares for a queen size quilt if it would look ok or if the squares would be too large. Thanks appreciate you input

I think it would be perfectly fine.

I think it depends on the pattern somewhat, but 12" blocks are quite common. Do you mean that all the squares will be solid pieces of fabric? If so it might still work, but would depend on whether the fabrics blend together well enough. Scrappy quilts tend to look better when the pieces are smaller than 12" square.

These are some 12" blocks for a queen size quilt. I'm not sure how sewn together this was in the photo, so they might be a little off, but you get the general idea.

I don't see why not. Even with a scrappy quilt 12" squares would work, but depends on the look you want. Have fun playing with the arrangement of the squares. A perfect opportunity to play with color, prints, print sizes, solids, stripes, plaids, a fussy cut or two, batiks, big and little florals. Maybe not all of these choices in one quilt, or maybe yes! Make geometric shapes: big squares, giant rectangles, 4 or 9 patches, a big X from corner to corner -- whatever comes to mind. Think of it as the grand experiment. What fun. And just think, Any square that hits a sour note in the grand symphony can be replaced and reused elsewhere--all cut up with a new life.

I'd say a lot of it is up to your preference. I'm also making a patchwork square quilt that is a little under queen size and the squares are 5.5" finished square. The particular fabric set I'm using has many different prints and colors so for me this was the best way to display them all. Some of the colors are brighter too, yellows and reds. If you try for 12" square and find the blocks seem too big, you will at least then have the option of trimming them down!

I'm currently doing two block of the month quilts, and both are 12" blocks - one is king size, the other queen.
