    the hole in the top looks like it is shaped to allow a thumb and finger to fit through. Thus, I would guess it is a pin jar.

    my DH also says inkwell...he is older than me. Can you take th top off. or put a bit of water in it an shake. any residue of ink will show.

    That was my thoughts exactly , maybe it was used a writting desk when not used for sewing. The glass container looks alot like an ink well.

    I have one of those also! Hope we find the answer. Mine came with an old White in a cabinet.

    When I first looked, my thought was inkwell, after I have read the comments. It seems that most agree. Two things could have happened, the model could have been multiple purpose, serving as a ladies "office' or a desk could have been repurposed for the machine.

    I'm going to guess the desk is a sewing desk. The machine's knee control can be seen in the knee hole. A talented carpenter could set up a machine in a regular desk, however, I'm guessing not.
