I just realized I have the cabinet (without inkwell, alas!) When we bought it, it had a vintage Kenmore in it.

Cheryl, I was born in 1948 and my mother used a ink-filling pen to write letters every Sunday until the mid-sixties. I was in the fifth grade in 1959 and the ink was on our supply list. So, in answer to your question: Yes it was still being used.

This desk reminds me of the one a lady in the town I was raised had one. Her husband got it for their daughter who had a tiny bedroom. She liked to sew and do her homework in her room. This took care of both. She was also in a young girl's sewing group. She used the little jar as an inkwell. When ball point pens came on the market, she cleaned the inkwell and did use it for broken needles. She never threw anything away so she probably still has it.
