I just wanted to thank the folks who suggested using a Magic Eraser to clean the sole plate of an iron. I just tried it, and it really is MAGIC! Just a few spritzs of water and rub the sole plate, and it's CLEAN.

Something else that works is your dryer fabric softener sheets...While the iron is still very warm, take a sheet, (protect your hands) and use the dryer sheet to clean the bottom of the iron...leaves it smooth and clean and your iron will glide across your clothes/fabric....Have done this for several years now...works great!

I use the Target brand of Magic Eraser - so much cheaper. I use them to clean the outsides of my gutters (I know I'm weird) because they are white and show staining after a year or so. Love Magic Erasers! Now my brother uses them to clean the top of his RV.

I'll have to check when I get home. They are next to the Magic Eraser brand. The magic eraser is a "Mr. Clean" sponge that is treated with something to clean with. The funniest thing is that the sponge disappears as it is used. I tried them on rubber mallet spots on hallway wall after son laid wood floor, but it left greasy looking mark, so I really hesitate to use them on my painted walls.

Our dollar store has them, Mr. Clean brand, pack of 10 in a resealable tub, for $7.00. They are great for so many uses.
(I'm in SW. Michigan)

I have been using dryer sheets for a few years now and the work beautifully. I place one sort of on the edge of the ironing board and pull the iron down over the edge.

It is so funny and strange to me.....one of my daughters uses and loves the Mr. Clean erasers and the other daughter and I have never and I mean never found them to work at all. We follow the directions to the tee and they just don't work for us. I have read so many posts here that people love them for so many things....but I'll be darned if they will work for me.
