You can use 2 1/2 inch strips of fabric...fused to batting, folded in 1/2 lengthwise...then zig-zagged together in the same format as rag rugs are sewn together...only by machine instead of the tedious hand work my G'ma did.

I made a rug with 3 layers of denim and 3 layers of flannel, and chenilled it. There's a picture on my blog. Just scroll down a little. http://quiltedsunshine.blogspot.com/ It really has a nice feel to it, and I use it in the guest bathroom.

I did this retreat here http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...g-t214011.html It was aimed at making a bath rug, which I did not need .
So I made a throw rug for my DD dog, then made a throw rug for DH's Man Cave, trying to keep the wood dust out of the house. They wash up great.

This is how we learned to make them. I also make mug rugs this way. This is also a way to use up scraps. They come out nice and heavy.

Is minky fabric absorbent, though? I had a minky-like bathrobe once, but it was NOT absorbent at all...if I put it on while I was still wet it would just press the water against me and make me feel weirdly cold, and I'd just stay wet! I had to get rid of it, it was just weird. (Now that I'm a quilter I wish I'd have saved it for a quilt back, LOL)

The wet factor wouldn't affect me as I dry first, then use a robe.
For the mat, yes, might be a consideration against it ... but oh so soft on the feet in the middle of the night!

I've made 2 rugs for my bedroom. Am planning on 2 more to match my new bedrunner. Here is the link to my original posting.

My friend Vonda uses up her 'ugly' 'what was I thinking?' fabrics out of her stash and crochets the most awesome
rugs! She uses this humongous crochet needle and half inch strips of cotton. Wish I had a pix to show all of you.
