I have started the 12 inch block but the four patch is 1/2 inch or more too big. I did not read where these were suppose to be cut down. The instructions say to cut 2 1/2 X 30 strips of both colors then cut in half, which makes a strip 15 inches....then to cut the five four-patches. Was I suppose to cut at 2 1/2 inches and have some left over or do I just cut four batch down to size? Did I miss something? I have studied this book carefully but I am a new quilter so I may not have understood. Any help would be welcomed.

I have made all the blocks in this - the four patch blocks are supposed to be square. After your two 2.5 strips sewn together you cut them 2.5 width. When sewn to make the 4 patch, the will be the same size as your single block. For the ones you already made, you are going to have to trim your 4 patches. Make sure you measure from the center seam.

From the picture your 2-1/2" strips were cut too big along one side. After sewing them together both colors should measure 2-1/4" from the seam to the raw edge. The good news is that they are too large and you can cut them down to 4-1/2". Fixable - too small and you'd be in deep trouble.

Is this common to have to cut them down? Why couldn't these but cut to size to begin with?

When you cut the sewn strips together you cut them to big. Measure your 4 patches and you will see that they are not square but rectangle. These are the only ones that need to be cut down. Mark your ruler for the right line to cut on. Sometimes our eyes wander and use the wrong line. The cheapest way to mark your rulers without harm is to use the blue painters tape.

Looks like the others answered about the four patch, but a note on Elenor Burns. She tends to sew large and then trim to size, so be sure to watch for these type of Instructions in her books.

Everyone answered your questions, but I'll address just a part...
Yes, you were supposed to cut them 2 1/2" wide and have left over fabrics...this is common in quilting.

Love this pattern! Good luck!

Check Eleanor's website for correctiions. Some of the book printings of the Underground Railroad had mistakes in the instructions.
