I'm just wondering how everyone edges their applique.... if I use fusible I usually do a type of blanket stitch (on the machine) round all the edges. But I'm about to do something with a lot smaller pieces.

If you are going to tackle lots of smaller pieces, I think I would raw edge applique with a fairly small straight stitch. If really small, you wouldn't be able to get the blanket stitches around them. Can you post a pic so we can see what the problem might be like, or is it a secret.

Blue

I normally use either blanket stitch or the needleturn technique. I've not been quilting long however I have been working on an applique BOM "Home Sweet Home" that I bought last year  Some parts have been smallish eg the so called frames on the windows so I have made these making binding & sewn them in place using the NTurn techinique.
If you need a pic of WIP give me a nudge

:-)
Not really a secret but there's not a picture yet, I haven't got that far! PMSL

I've never used a straight stitch round the edge, do the edges fray? How close do you get to the edge?

I do like needleturn, it's so neat... but this project needs to be a bit faster and doesn't need the dimension of needleturned, so will be all fusible. :-)

How about a tight and narrow zig-zag? If you use the zig-zag all around, you can adjust it as the pieces get smaller.

I usually do the blanket stitch too.

Oh, hadn't thought of that. Zig zag would have a similar effect. :-)

for the zig-zag, i would use an invisible thread, so the little colored piece isn't all covered up with thread.

That's something I was worried about! Either not being able to match the thread well, or ending up with the thread and stitching being the focal point instead of the shape underneath. Thank you :-)
