Default What is it called when.........?

Hmm, if I am putting a row of fabric, that is all different fabrics, around each tshirt block , then putting sashing of all the same fabric between all the blocks, what is the first row of fabric I add called? Is it still sashing? Is it trim? Edging?
Is sashing only when it ties the whole top together? Borders go around the unit... or am I adding a border to each square?
Sometimes it really matters what things are called when trying to explain what one is doing and plans to do.

Some people call it framing a block but you can call it anything you like.

My sister died in 2003 and left many, many quilt blocks. Apparently she loved to make the blocks. I gave most of them to her daughter to finish, but found out she is not interested. One that I took, she had put an applique star on muslin and sewed plaid to one side of all the blocks. I found lots of plaids with it and sewed different plaids to each side of each blocks. Then I sewed them together. I can't call it sashing because it doesn't all match, so when everyone calls it 'framing', I became excited! Finally, I found a word for it! Thanks for asking the question I needed an answer to.

I think that the terms "framing" and "sashing" can be used interchangeably. In each case, a strip (or multiple strips) of fabric is sewn around a quilt block.

Framing is an excellent term! It fits exactly what I am doing and sets it apart from the sashing that I will do later.
Thanks for the input, and I'm glad it helped someone besides me!
