I have been looking for new thread. I keep coming across different sizes and weights. For instance, "cotton machine quilting thread 1200 yd size 50, 30 wt. I also came across some that where 1200 yd size 50 50 wt. What does this all mean? Now is this the right kind of thread to use on a regular sewing machine.

Peckish gave us a resource for superior threads but I don't know how to find it so I'll give you what I copied out.
Thread Weights:
A=20 miles weighs 1 lb.
B=40 miles weighs 1 lb. (labelled 40 wt. and finer)
C=60 miles weighs 1 lb. (labelled 60 wt. and finer yet) hopes this helps

yes, go to Superior Threads web site and they have thread sizes and needle sizes explained. Plus, they have a chart, you can print out with suggested needle sizes to use w/ either your LA or domestic machine with all their threads.

I think the biggest thing is what does your machine handle. Most of the thread I use on my sewing machines are 50wt or 40tx. I have a longarm and use Signature Cotton on my LA, so I also use this on my DSM, putting the 3000 yd spool on a stand that holds a large spool and has an arm that comes up to guide the thread.

Basically, 1200 yds is the length of thread on the spool.
Size/weight 40 is like saying "dress size 10" only reverse; the higher the number the finer the thread (in general).

A 50 wt thread can be used for piecing and quilting. If I want my quilting to stand out more I use a 40 wt thread.
