It goes right and left to cover the raw edge of the material.

I believe it is a type of stitch.
An overcast stitch is used to to both protect the raw edges of fabric and as a decorative stitch. The overcast stitch is most effective at keeping raw fabric edges from unraveling when it is stitched twice over the edge of the fabric to make a zigzag stitch.

thank you so much for your replys. Thats what i was wanting in my next machine.
Does anyone have this machine and if so what do you think of it? Im a newbie and have only done a few projects. My latest was an outfit for my daughter and then currently a rag quilt for my son.

I have it and loved it until recently. Funny this topic should pop up at this moment , as I am on hold to Brother Service trying to get my machine fixed :hunf: Not going so well  I took my machine in for cleaning and have it checked as it was not stitching straight. It came back with something rubbing inside, I took it back to the dealer who sprayed more oil inside and said it would make noise and sent it back home with me. As long as you are gentle with the machine it is great , light weight and portable. But at the moment I am not thrilled with the machine or Brother
