Which needle do you use when peicing and quilting? Do you use the same needle to do both? What size is good? I have Schmetz universal and quilting needles but am not sure which one to use? Any input would be most appreciated.

I use the betweens for both because I like the way it feels. Not to say this is right, but it's what I do.

Are you asking about machine needles or hand quilting needles?

For machine piecing and quilting I use universal 80/12 needles. I use quilting needles for machine quilting also 80/12. So I use different needles for piecing and quilting.

For hand quilting I use size twelve betweens made by Piecemaker. I don't do any hand piecing so I can't give any advice there.

I use 80/12 for piecing and I bump up to 90/14 for quilting... I am going through many layers quilting, so I like a little heavier needle.

Hey Myrna---I usually use a size 75 needle for piecing cottons and a 80 quilting needle. If I am quilting flannel top and back I use a size 90 needle for the quilting.

I use the 90/14 for just about everything. I have a little rather inexpensive sewing machine, and the heavier needle seems to go through the thicknesses of multiple seams better.
