A fabulous guide to needles is given at the Superior Threads site. Not sure of the exact address but if you go to www.superiorthreads.com you will be directed to the needle chart. Not only is size important, but also the type of needle. It is all explained very well here. I am not associated with this company other than being a big fan.....:o)

i like shmetz 10s and 12s (universal) for piecing.
i use 12s or 14s (quilting) for quilting ... depending on the thread.
