Default Aurifil thread - piecing and machine quilting and needle question

I searched the board but couldn't find an answer. I hope you can help me!

I'm in love with Aurifil thread. I've used the 50w cotton for piecing and it works great. I love the look of it! My sewing machine loves it, too. I've used Gutermann before but I like Aurifil a lot better.

I would like to use Aurifil for machine quilting, too. I checked some online stores and they recommended 28w for machine quilting. Do you use the same Aurifil thread for piecing and machine quilting? What do you recommend? Is there a difference between machine quilting with 50w and 28w - for example in how it looks?

My next project is a babyquilt so the thread has to survive laundry and lots of use!

Also, do you use the same needle for piecing and machine quilting?

Thank you!

I've also used the 50 wt for piecing and machine quilting. I see on Jinny Beyer's site that she uses the 28 wt for hand quilting.

I have a selection of several different weights of Aurifil thread for quilting. 12, 28, 40 and 50. I've used them all for quilting, but only the 50 for piecing.

choosing the weight to use for quilting depends greatly on how much you want the quilting to show. Using a heavier weight (smaller number) will make the quilting very defined, especially if the thread color contrasts with the fabric color.

I use the 28 wt for hand quilting, the 50 wt for hand applique and the 12 wt for hand embroidery. I hand piece with 40 wt thread, but haven't yet used Aurifil for that, nor for machine piecing or quilting. I had the impression Aurifil was a 2-ply thread and not very strong, but that could be a misconception.

Thank you for all this information. I am in the process of buying new threads to me for my future projects.
