I use the 28 wt for hand quilting, the 50 wt for hand applique and the 12 wt for hand embroidery. I hand piece with 40 wt thread, but haven't yet used Aurifil for that, nor for machine piecing or quilting. I had the impression Aurifil was a 2-ply thread and not very strong, but that could be a misconception.
