Ive used several different ways but like the disappearing ink pen the best. Of course you have to sew it that day or the lines disappear.

I marked a white quilt backing with a Frixon black pen. It ironed completely off. Worked great. I washed the quilt to remove any ink residue. Some may worry about any residue being left but that is too far down on my list of things to fret over.

I am still wary about anything that is a liquid or is runny for marking - anything that says "pen" in the title .

I have seen an 'older' item that had fade marks where it had apparently been marked with something or other.

I use a pounce pad for stencils and chalk for freehand. It brushes off easily.

I recently tried the Crayola Washable markers and they washed out well. I experimented with each color on a sample of fabric and washed it to see what happened. The blue (on light fabrics) seemed the best. Try them out and see how they perform for you.

If you have never used a Frixion Pen, now is the time to do so!
They disappear when you use a medium dry heat setting.
They are wonderful, beats all methods of marking fabric.

I've had luck with Crayola Washable markers. But it does require actual washing of the finished product. I've read here on QB that one of the colors doesn't come out well.- I can't remember which one now, so I'll need to research it before I try it again.

I use the blue water erase pens on my own quilts because I will wash them. On customer quilts, however, I only use the Pounce powder, purple air erase or Bohin ceramic white lead.
