Default What's the difference?

Can someone please tell me (or show pictures) of the difference between regular quilting cotton and shot cotton?

Thanks in advance!

Recently on Fons and Porter they were talking about shot cottons. The ones shown almost looked like solids. They said they're woven with 2 different thread colors. So they seem "shimmery." Most regular quilting cotton fabric isn't woven. It's printed on a base white or cream colored fabric.

Shot cottons show as a different color depending on the direction you place your fabric.

Here is a site selling Kaffe Shot Cottons - the pictures are pretty good and you can clearly see the variation in colors.

Here are a few blogs with discussions

Personally, I saw them in a LQS and did not like them. The weave was too large.

Have never heard of shot cottons before. Looked at the different links and found very interesting.

it is new, tho i hadn't read that kaufman has a line of shot cotton now. i started reading articles and adds for jinny beyer line of shot cotton fabrics about a year ago. it was popular fabric in the 60's also. i made several skirts using it. my favorite one was red & gold. really neat fabric.

i noticed that too. i had used shot cottons, or at least they looked like the modern shot cottons when i was a teen. the weave was heavier than the calico i also used for sewing clothing, but not as heavy & course as the new shot cotton coming out now. i won't be buying any because i don't like the course texture...tho maybe it could be used w vintage feedsack fabric when a solid color would be good addition to a block or a sashing or ...

I saw some at a LQS, it seems to me that it's going in the wrong direction. I didn't like the way it felt in my hand so it will remain on the shelf.
