Why I make scrappies I think.

I love the memories of a scrap quilt. Each fabric was from a project I did and I remember the fun making the "other" quilt and for whom I made it. A little trip down memory lane and I feel the love I have for quilting and the one receiving the quilt each night as I fall alseep.

I love scrappies because I like to use up "extra" fabric. I guess it makes me feel better about how much I spend for planned quilts. I also like them because I usually don't try to match fabrics. I just pick a pattern and start cutting, and whatever happens, happens. And yet they always look great. It always surprises me how fabrics that shouldn't go together end up looking great together.

I wanted to learn to quilt after spreading out a quilt that my grandmother made and listening to my dad say, "That's George's shirt, Mama made an apron out of that one, that was my favorite shirt ...". They were all gone when he told me about the fabrics, but the memories lived on in that quilt. I don't use clothing to make my quilts, but my scrappy quilt gave me the same feeling. I could see the quilts I had made for other people in the quilt. I saw a scrap from Emily's quilt, one from my DGD's quilt, one from my son's quilt ... AND there were no rules and no seams that absolutely had to match unless I chose to match them.

When I make planned quilts I seem to end up with a lot more scraps than pieces big enough to use in another planned quilt, so using up my scraps is always enjoyable. The majority of quilts I have made in my 5 years of quilting have been scrappy, and as I'm far from great at getting points to match up, I find scrappies are very forgiving.
