To make the circles I have first drawn the circle on fusible facing and then add a 1/4 inch. I sew the fusible onto the circle, along the drawn line, with the right sides together and then snip the fusible to turn the circle right side out. The circles come out perfect every time. I am one those people that does not like raw edges.

Using my applique pressing sheet, I press the circle so that none of the fusible sews and then fuse it onto my dresden plate, then use whatever stitch you like. That's the easiet way I know to do it. I'm not good at needle turned applique.
Me too, E. Burns method and love it. Use pinking scissors to trim the seam allowance to make the perfect circle when turned.

I love your scrappy Dresden plates, it's going to be a beautiful quilt. When I made my Dresden Plate quilt I used the pattern from Eleanor Burns and Quilt in a Day. Eleanor makes a circle of fabric, with a circle of fusible interfacing, then she sews around the circle with small stitches, trims the circle, cuts an opening in the middle of the fusible interfacing, turns it right side out, using a knitting needle or other type of tool, then places it in the middle of the Dresden plate and irons it on. It will stay in place until you do the final stitching around the center. It makes the Dresden Plate a little bit easier. You can also go to Quilt in a Day.com to watch one of her videos which will probably explain it better than I just did, but her method works.

I use used fabric sheets to do the circles by placing the circle, including the 1/4 " seam allowance right side down, sew the circle, then cut off excess fabric sheet....make a slit in the fabric sheet and turn...a perfect circle every time.

If you stitch one stitch in towards the center (tapers) about 2/3 down and the center lays down!
