    :)

A gal in my bible study is getting rid of all her quilting supplies...and quilty items..she gave me a few gifts last night...these were with them.

The first quilt is a quilt top that is clearly divided in half..someone started it in 1931 ...which is dated by the newspaper foundation on crumbling from the back of the quilt..that portion is hand pieced..then someone must have decided to try to make a quilt from that original piece and machine sewed on three more strips of scraps...I don't know how long ago....I am thinking about finishing this quilt which will then force me to have to take the paper off the back..but since it has already kind of been altered it doesn't really matter does it? Would it be better to take them apart again? I don't know I get sentimental about these things.....I think it need to be turned into what it was originally supposed to be ..a quilt that should be loved....and I would consider a collaboration between me and two strangers.

The other pictures are of blocks....I am assuming old shirts....I will eventually turn this into a quilt for sure...just not sure what the dates would be...all hand pieced.

But what a gift she gave me...

    Blessings!

    Back of quilt...newspaper pieces

Are the acids from the paper causing the quilt to yellow? If so maybe that's your justification in removing it? I love it when an old quilt is saved.

I knoww what you mean, I get caught up in ......Someones family wore these clothes and lived, and played and cried. You can kind of see which ones might have been "their good clothes, and school clothes". This is what is left of their lives, their dreams,..,I could go on and on. What neat stories could be made up to tell grandchildren someday about what these lives might have been like,,,,,,,,Can you tell I have no old passed downed quilts. Do have a small scrap from a bed quilt my DGM and DGGM made for me when I was 7, it actually went through a tornado at my parents home years ago in MN...Enjoy these wonderful gifts. Jackie

Y'know, I'd finish it with the paper left inside. It kinda gives it a "heart" made by the other women who worked on it.

Whenever I make a doll or bear, I always put a softly stuffed pink felt heart inside the stuffing in the heart area. I've done this as long as forever, but my mom doesn't remember anyone she knows ever doing this, so I have no one to have mimicked on this gesture.

When you mentioned hating to take out the paper, my own felt heart habit came to mind, and if it were me, I'd leave in the paper for the same reason.
